Do I need to bleed radiators if I have automatic vents?

Hi all,

Probably a stupid question, from a first-time homeowner who just moved into a house with radiators supplying the heat.

I have read that radiators need to be bled from time to time, but all radiators in the home have (what appears to me as) Hoffman automatic steam vents already installed, which look like this:

So my question is, will my radiators still need to be bled for optimum heating, or do these release the trapped air automatically and make bleeding unnecessary?

Thank you in advance.

If you have STEAM vents, then no bleeding is necessary since you have a STEAM heat system.

Only HOT WATER systems may require occasional bleeding.

I highly recommend that you become familiar with the operation of your boiler system, learn how to do some simple preventative maintenance items. To that end, you should purchase this book:

We Got Steam Heat!: Dan Holohan: 9780974396002: Books

This is the best 25 bucks you can spend on your system.

Since QUALIFIED steam heat technicians are getting rare these days, it is important for you to understand what's going on down there at the boiler and this book will help you do so.
