Hot Water Tank Leaking From Top- Help!

The water tank was leaking from the top, with water running down the sides of the tank. Turned off the cold water inlet and turned the dial to pilot, and water stopped. Hubby is a great DIY guy, so is this something we can handle? What tools/parts might we need? There is some corrosion on both water inlets and in the middle. I can see the trail of minerals on the sides of the tank, so this has been slowly leaking for a while. The temp was as high as it would go, but it's been like that since we moved in almost 3 years ago. Any help? Thanks.

If the tank itself is leaking, it is shot - replace it. If a piping connection is leaking, redo it.
