Testing a used boiler

I'm looking at some used boilers to replace my current system. They are fairly recent models. 3-7 years old. Most of the owners claim they worked fine and they were replaced with forced air systems.

Before I drop some bones on one of them what can I do to verify that an unconnected boiler will be safe and functional?

What kind of boiler, cast iron, copper fin, condensing ?
With any boiler a hydronic pressure test is about all you can do with it sitting on a skid.
Suppose you could wire a line cord to a condensing boiler to see if it will try to light off, though u may have to jump out a LWCO or pressure switch to make it happen.
