Even with a flame retention head you will get a better burn with a refractory "ignition tile" than simply burning into a large furnace. I wouldn't dream of using a significantly smaller oil burner in that boiler without either a refractory chamber or at the least an ignition tile.

Gas...different story. Gas-fired commercial boilers often have a ten-to-one (or better) turn down ratio.


Mike, thanks for the link. It appears that the thermostatic valves for one-pipe systems are actually thermostatic VENT valves. I'm not sure how well they would work with 10 psi steam. The thermostatic valves for two-pipe systems actually operate on the steam inlet to the radiators.
