Adjustment of baseboard louver for maximum heat

I have baseboard hot water heat. The heat units are the ones with a single adjustable louver to regulate the are convection up through the units. I dissaasembled them for yearly vacuuming and I'm not sure how wide the openings were set.
Will I get more heat with the louver set to a narrower opening (my thought) or is it better to set a wide opening but I'm thinking that the air will pass more quickly up and out and not be heated enough. Can someone provide the industry recommendation? Thanks for any help.
