Cold expansion tank (old style)

My old style expansion tank is cold from top to bottom, but I hear boiling water in the pipes right above the boiler. The boiler pressure valve is normal when I open it manually. Should I worry that the expansion tank is not hot on the bottom?

I disagree. Anytime the water is heated it expands. If you have noises and the tank is cold I would have to ask what the system pressure is. Is the line hot to the expansion tank?
The system is expanding to somewhere. Maybe the pressure is low and it is expanding to the upper floors.

I don't know what that is . . . . do you have a Pressure Gauge ?

What does it read ?

Do you have heat to your 2nd floor ?

If it's a normal Hydronic FHW System, the water ought not be allowed to reach the boiling point.

The "old style" expansion tank is one that's suspended from the basement ceiling, lengthwise ?
