Replace drain valve on old style horizontal expansion tank with ball valve?

I have a hot water system with old style horizontal expansion tank in the basement ceiling rafters above the furnace/boiler. The drain valve on the expansion tank is dripping from the outlet (not from the bonnet/valve stem).

I don't think this is a special valve that allows air to get in while the tank is draining, it seems like a standard gate valve. In my opinion, gate valves tend to leak, so I was thinking of replacing the gate valve with a ball valve.

Or, I can replace just the washer in the existing valve. Any opinions or recommendations?

Wow, very nice, I didn't know they made valves like that. I'll if I can buy something like that locally because I need to fix the valve as soon as possible.

If y9ur drain valve has a garden hose thread then just add a garden hose cap with a hose washer. Wintertime is NOT when you should be doing work on the heating system.

Thanks, I will just cap off the drain valve until after the heating season.
