What is this banging/slide/clank sound in pipes near burner?

Since it got cold, this sound occurs when my heat is circulating but the boiler is not on. Is this air in the pipes? It is loud! It is coming from the pipe I am zoomed in on at the start, you can physically feel the slide/bang as it occurs, as if a marble was rolling through the pipe and slamming.

Welcome to the forums.

That noise sounds like one of the zone valves in your picture. They have a motor in them to open the valve. It may be broken or worn.

You could try turning all the thermostats down and then turn one back up at a time to see which one is causing the noise.

Those valves often have a lever to manually open the valve. I have a similar valve that is noisey when it closes that I need to write a proposal for.

Is this expensive to fix? Can I DIY even though I am a total novice? Any help would be most appreciated.

This is normally a pretty easy fix. They close too fast when another zone is calling and the pump is still running and this valve closes it closes so fast it bangs.
Remove the cover, you will see two closure springs. Remove one of the springs and that problem will go away. The success for this action is about 98% of the time.
