boiler burner ignition

My hot water heating system lights the burner when the water temp reaches the low limit whether the circulation pump is running or not. Is this typical of older systems or should the burner only light when the circulation pump is running?

Depending on whether your system has a hot water coil in it, and whether or not it's set up to run as a "warm start", this may be normal operation. Need more info- Steve

It is an American Standard system with no hot water coil. It uses a White Rodgers 3 wire zone valve. What information do you need?

What do you have for an aquastat and how do you get your hot water.

Many older boilers were set up for warm start, like yours - the boiler stays up to temperature all the time, at least in heating season. There is some additional jacket loss from the boiler, compared to cold-start setups, but it is negligible fuel-cost wise with natural gas. Newer boilers are usually set up for cold start, with any hot water heat on a priority zone, but there is a concern that converting an older warm-start boiler to cold start may lead to leaks.

The reason I asked the question is because, when my burner kicks on while the circulation pump is not running I get a loud hammering sound in my registers. Assuming it is a warm start system, I think I need to look closer at the expansion tank.
