Peerless Boiler isn't Lighting all of a sudden

I hope you can help. I have a family of seven that depends on this very old boiler. My house was built in 1961 and the boiler is original. Its a model #gem-175a-wc. It is a forced hot water boiler with an intermittent pilot, but the pilot isn't lighting when the zone valves open up/the thermostat calls for heat. I've turned the gas valve off, and after several minutes I turned it back on and lit it manually. And of course this lights the pilot and subsequently the burners. Any ideas or recommendations? I used some steel wool on the flame sensor and the electrode, but this didn't help the situation. I've turned the boiler off because when the t-stat calls for heat the circ pump comes on and you can smell the gas from the pilot however it never sparks.
I would appreciate any help you could offer.
