Was this heating system converted from steam to hot water? A better picture is needed so more of the piping can be observed. It could be an old air separator or part of a condensate return trap system. More pictures needed for a better view of surrounding piping.

Alright so I added more context surrounding that first picture but what I知 still trying to find is the name of that box looking structure in the first picture

There is no conversion from steam, our boiler is just hot water, it circulates hot water through our home heating system.

On a steam boiler it looks like a steam trap. On a hot water boiler..... it is some type of old style air separator. It has a pressure relief valve on it as well as an air bleeder.

I added two pictures and labeling to your first post.
