1950s American Standard 4-SA-8E boiler sticky gas valve

Hi,

Our old house has American Standard 4-SA-8E boiler with Detroit Control Series 554 NOV 575 gas valve. Pictures attached.
Boiler has 2 issues.

1. Gas valve is sticky. It works most of the time. But on some days it refuses to open randomly. Hitting it slightly makes it work. But it's too late to know that it has stopped working and temperature of entire house has dropped below 50. It is too risky? Can I take off the valve, clean and lubricate it? I would prefer to replace the valve. Is there a valve that I can replace it with?

2. Boiler does not detect high temperature. Is there is a call for heat it keeps on heating the water and does not stop even if the boiler is too hot. I think it is related to the gas valve. Any suggestions are welcome.

I have to undertake a major renovation project in 3 years and would like to avoid replacing the boiler before that but safety and working condition of boiler is very important.

You have a potentially very dangerous situation. Shut it down and call a professional.

Welcome to the forums.

A agree 100%.
You have a valve that intermittently won't open.
That same valve can have an intermittent problem and not close.

As far as I know..... that valve has no safety controls. It doesn't know if the pilot isn't lit.
Minimal/no safeties for the boiler either.

I would not recommend this as a DIY repair job.

Not easily, no.
And even if you replace it, you’ll have to have the proper instruments to set things like gas pressure.
Id suggest calling a tech in for this.

I once experienced a gas fuel valve that stuck open - very, very scary, even when you are standing right there and can shut the manual gas shutoff valve at the boiler.

Here are the safety devices I have on my current boiler: 1. two redundant 24-V gas valves, in series; 2. hi-hi limit aquastat, with lockout, wired in series with the main control aquastat; 3. branch circuit breaker for the boiler clearly labeled with a red tag in the main panel; 4. emergency boiler power switch just outside the boiler room; 5. red tag on the manual gas valve at the boiler; 6. adjustable wrench near the outside door nearest the gas meter. Maybe overkill, but fear inspires caution.

That American Standard boiler is very old but will probably out last both you and me . The gas valve is something I saw early in my career that is a combination gas valve with a temperature control limit .My recommendation would be to call in a professional HVAC company and have them equip that boiler with all new controls. There is nothing wrong with keeping that boiler forever or until it cracks, which may never happen, unless you your self wants to replace it. Something to consider is that the cost to replace that boiler would probably never be paid for by the cost savings of a new boiler.
