How to drain this water heater

How do you open this? I nearly took the pvc part off and it was barely any water drained

Is the water heater already junk and you are just wanting to drain it and replace it?

Your picture is the drain valve. Turn off the water in and open a faucet. Just turn the valve up to 1/2 turn counter-clockwise. Close it by turning clockwise. If necessary, use a wrench or pliers to keep the stem from turning.

Even if the valve was opening correctly.... it's tough to drain a tank.
If I'm replacing a tank... I cut the supply lines.
Cap one and connect my air compressor to the other.
It doesn't take much pressure to force the water out.

Thanks guys. Got it. I didn't even open any faucets to relieve pressure, apparently I have no idea how water and air behave, but it's going slowly now
