Filling in basement window

Hi:

A previous owner of my old home (70 years) who was less-than-bright and exceptionally cheap installed a ground-level deck. The deck covered two window wells, but the owner seems to have placed plywood in front of the windows. (I won't know for sure until I begin digging.) I want to fill in these windows with concrete block. This project doesn't scare me (I've done enough work on this house to qualify me as some sort of junior-grade tradesman), but I need a starting point.

So I'm looking for information on laying concrete block, especially filling in a window space.

Can anyone suggest a book or web site with good information?

Thanks.
