Unhappy chunks of concrete coming off exterior foundation

I'm having a problem at the base of my house. Chunks (anywhere from the size of a nickle to the size of fist, but no more than one inch deep) of the cinder block keep falling off. I don't have any problems with cracking or any basement water leakage problems, but I'm worried if this is a warning sign for future problems. I keep patching them with quik-crete (sp?) and then I apply a few coats of a water-proofing paint, but every spring more chunks drop off. What's the best way to fix this? And is this something I should worry about or is this just more an annoying aesthetic problem that a structural one?
FYI: The house is 30 years old.

Thanks!

Chunks of the cinder blocks are coming off?? Are you sure it's the blocks or a cement coating over the block?

Maybe it is just the cement coating...as you can tell, I'm quite a novice here.
If I posted a picture, would you take a look at it?
