drainage around foundation

My house is on a concrete slab and has brick veneer walls. I have had some water come into the house in one corner. There is a steep hill outside that drains water away, but also toward the house in some areas. My problem is that this one interior corner that gets wet is about 4 foot underground.
I have dug a 4 foot deep trench along the wall and have exposed the concrete footer. I plan to paint the bricks and footer with a concrete sealant and put plastic over that plus a french drain.

My question is this: Where should I put the french drain and exactly how do I install it? Do the holes go up or down? Do I need gravel around it? Any advice appreciated.
