Building a stone wall

When erecting a stone wall on the house's exterior facade do you have to fasten every stones with some kind of bracket on the framing of the house? The stones are quite heavy and are made of granite. I would think that for safety reasons, masons would do that then seal the gaps with mortar. Please help me out on this.

Is this actual stone or cultured stone? I've been considering the addition of a stone detail around the bottom of our house and am curious.

There should be metal ties around 18" on center nailed or screwed into the framework and extending into the masonry.Properly laid stone(I wish you luck, good stone masons are hard to find and exspensive) is self supporting .Proper fit of each stone is important.
