What to fill between concrete block and red-bricks walls ?

Hi all,
My front steps built on a huge concrete block. I am building red-bricks walls surrounding this concrete block just for decorative purpose. There will be gaps about 1 inch to 1 and a half inch between the sides of the concrete block and the inside of the bricks walls. I am wonderring what should I use to fill these gaps before I put the blue-stone steps back on top to finish my front steps.
Any advices would be appreciated.

Kev

Could you cut some strips of red brick and use them?

Hi Chris,
When I removed the old bricks, I saw some thing look like stone dust filled up these gaps. I believe it was some kind of dry cement or mortar !! I really don't know if they had deliberately filled in these gaps with this stone-dust-like stuff, or it actually mortar that has become crumble, disintegrated over time. That why I was confuse and don't know what should I use to fill the gaps.
Thanks
