Brick Chimney

Brick Chimney
I had 2 bricks fall off our chimney. The chimney is only 12 years old. Is this normal and is it costly to repair?

It seems unusual that they fell out. Are any others loose? The bricks can be replaced simply by removing the old mortar, cleaning the bricks of mortar, then reinstalling them with fresh mortar.
If there are more than these two that are loose, a mason might be a good person to come take a look at the chimney.

There are more that are loose. I had a mason give me a quote yesterday to fix, do the pointing and waterproof. His estimate was $1,475. I have no idea if this is a fair price or not.

Around here, tuckpointing runs around $4 a square foot for the surface of the wall.
You might call a couple of more masons for comparative quotes. An alternative would be a chimney sweep for a different take on the problem.
Hope this helps.
