Retro-ing a "Rat Slab"

hey all...

i have a circa 1938 cottage style home, with 3/4 basement the other 1/4 is unfinished crawlspace, approximately 200 square feet.

being that the house is under total renovation, i figured now would be the best time to address this issue.

i'd like to pour a 4" *rat slab* which would require approx. 2.8 c/u of redi mix.

***

i'm trying to find out what exactly is recommended under the pour?

my initial ponderings have me thinking something along these lines:
6 mil vapor barrier
gravel
reinforcing web
mix

i'm also wondering how i would level it being that there would be no *removable* forms?

any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

thanks much,
--j

If the dirt is undisturbed and this is just for the crawl space, not a basement floor. Gravel would be easy to rake smooth, then lay 6 mil polyethylene, 6 inch wire, then pour the concrete. Here is a link to a video that shows leveling concrete without having forms to bridge with a screed. http://************/3je5a

Hope this helps.

You can also install sreed boards in the middle of the pour about 10' apart this will give you a level to go by, strike off the concrete and imeditley remove the boards and fill it in with concrete, also strike a chalk line along the walls at the correct height.

Yeah, this is *only* a crawl space... the basement part is fine.

I'm not sure what you mean by *undisturbed*.
It is slightly unlevel, so would leveling it *disturb* it?

and also, what kind of gravel would you recommend?

i checked out the link that was great.....

screed boards in the middle just might do the trick for this detail!!

thanks!
