Tip for cement block

I had to make foundation wall for my kitchen additaion out of cement block
My worst nightmare was laying the cement block
Either the cement was to soft or to hard and the block would not hold the right space.
i used 4 marble at each end to support the block
Now have nice 3/8 joints

I'm not a mason either but have laid several block for myself/friends. Never used marbles but have often used small rocks or dried mortar to help level out the block. My motto - whatever works and still looks good and hey we didn't have to pay a mason!
