How much will crushed stone (item 4) compact

I'm in the process of installing pavers for a walkway and I think I'm making a newbie mistake.

I've laid the base of crushed stone (fine to it looks like 3/4"-1" stones) to the exact height needed to get the pavers even with the driveway and the grass (including enough room for 1-1.5" of sand). I've spent quite a bit of time getting this leveled and sloped to ensure the water drains away from the house and we'll have no / minimal puddles.

Now that I'm about to rent a plate compactor to compact the the base, I'm thinking it will compact too much and the pavers will wind up being too low.

How much could I expect the base to compact (there is 6"-8" of base down now)? If it's more than an 1/2" to an inch, will I have to get more base material, re-level and slope and then compact again?

Man I wish I'd thought about this earlier.

hi
pack it good and used granite dust to bring it to the heigth + 1/2 inch then lay paver and the pack them again
used granite dust instead of sand to hold paver in place and pack again
you could pass a bulldozer over it and will not bulge

good luck
