Brick Lintel Over Garage Door

Hi,

We are going to put brick veneer on a garage. The cement contractor poured the foundation with a brick ledge. We have the brick, flashing, ties, mortar and steel lintels.

Our garage doors are 9 foot wide. The garage is a one-story and there will be about 8 1/2 foot of brick above the garage door. We forgot to ask at the brick yard just how the steel lintel is placed. Is it typically just supported on each end by the bricks belowwith no attachment to the header OR is it better to bolt it into the 2" x 12" headers over the garage doors.

I would appreciate it if anyone would share their expert advice on this one.

Thanks Karen

The steel lintel is supported by the bricks beneath it, it should extend past the opening at least a foot and be thick enough to hold the weight above it, are you doing the brickwork yourself?

Yes, hubby plans on doing the brickwork. Not doing anything fancy. Thanks for the reply; I appreciate it.
