chimneys

i keep hearing that having your chimney cleaned is an unnecessary expense. a sought of scam. is this true? i have my oil burner cleaned and tuned up every year and they clean out the pipe leading to the chimney. is this good enough?

Oil burners do not foul your chimney in the same manner a wood stove does. You might have some soot in your galv pipe to the chimney but not much past that. It is a 'joke' doing it for the cleaning route, but it is important to inspect the chimney, cap and flue never the less. You surely do not want to have an obstruction and land up with the fumes back into the house.
