Question stucco over brick

the original part of my house was built in 1953. thus there are several layers of paint i am sure of all types over the bricks. i want to stucco and have found it very painstacking to remove the paint. is there any way around this via a bonding agent or something?

The stucco needs something to which to bond. Roughing the paint along with chiseling out some of the mortar between bricks should provide a good surface and some keys. I would feel uncomfortable about stucco over painted brick, but that may just be me.

Although normally used for wooden structures, the metal lath attached to the wall may be an alternative for a good bonding surface.

Hope this helps.
