Can Grinding Masonry Cause Damage?

I just hired someone to tuckpoint my building. He just started grinding out the masonry between the joints and I noticed that he has grinded into the brick pretty regularly to remove all the masonry. After thinking about it , it would be hard to grind out the masonry using a grinder without hitting the brick at all. Im afraid that there is a "finish" on the brick that once damaged can cause the brick to crumble, Even if the damage will be covered with masonry eventually. What are your thought on this?

It sounds like you have a fly by nite outfit working on your house.
