Question Stucco vs. dirt question

Our house was built in the early 60's. Dirt is up against the stucco exterior walls, thereby causing some cracking in the stucco. How bad can this be? What can be done to correct this? Thanks for any advice.

Welcome to the forums

Is the stucco painted? Stucco always holds up better when it has a protecive coating. Depending on the size of the cracks, clean and caulk or restucco.

Stucco vs. dirt question

The dirt is not causing the stucco to crack. You probably have poor drainage and the moisture (freeze/thaw or wet/dry cycles) is the cause.

Get rid of the excess moisture.

If the dirt is not well below the wood behind the stucco, you could have big problems down the road.

We've got the dirt dug out away from the house about 6" deep & wide right now. If after we improve the drainage, repair/seal cracks, would it be better to fill in the trench with gravel rather than dirt? Thanks!

Gravel would be much better than dirt. It does not hold the moisture and can dry out.
