2 questions regarding a remodel...

My first question pertains to a garage I would like to convert to livable space. The issue is there is a 3 block high partial wall around this area. How to I transition this to plywood on the outside (for stucco) and drywall on the inside (for drywall) when the block is wider than than the 2 X 4s I would use as studs?

My second question is in regards to doors. In one area of the house, I would like to convert an existing window into a door,. I am assuming I would only have to remove the blocks below the window and install the door... Am I correct? Also, I would like to add a door between the existing living room and the proposed added living space (the current garage). What do I have to do to add a door into an existing block wall?

I really appreciate your help!!

Welcome to the forums Dan

Above the block on the exterior I would assume there is currently a wall which would more than likely have plywood behind it. Basically you just need a level surface [with tar paper backing] to install wire lath for the stucco to adhere to.

Inside the garage you would either need to give up 4" of space and frame the wall out thicker or what most do is just carpet it with the floor or trim out with wood.

To install a new ext dr, just remove the block beneath the window - the door and framing can't be wider than the window. Interior door depends on what type of wall. If it is load bearing the wall may require support while the opening is made and a header inserted. There is a good likelyhood there are elec wires in the wall that will have to be dealt with.

hope this helps
