culture stone installation

i was thinkin about putting some stone around my front door. right now it is plywood sheething. i'm confused as to preping the surface. do i just need to apply house-wrap, cover w mesh, and skim coat w/ mortar before getting ready to apply stone? do i need some sought of cement backerboard like when tiling a floor?
thanks

Either or. If you already have plywood sheathing, just cover with builders paper and lath, then put on one coat of cementious stucco and apply the stone along with the second layer. If you have cement board, you can just use thinset to apply the stone directly.

So i could simply attach backerboard and begin attaching the stone? that sound s like the easiest and fastest way.

What style stone? If it is a drystack, that is the best way. If you are going to have exposed joints, it is probably eaiser to go the lathing route.
