Just awarded a contract to redo my asphalt driveway.

Driveway is about 1300 square feet and is in pretty bad shape. He said he is going to excavate it all, lay 4" of stone, roll it flat, and then 3" of asphalt over that. Side borders will be Belgian Blocks. Warranty will be 2 yrs, plus an extra yr if I allow them to come back after 6 months and apply a top coat for 100 dollars extra. Entire job will be $4500. Is this a good price? I am located in the North East. THANKS!!!

Seems ok to me. Here's my comparison info:

Have a 1500 sq ft asphalt driveway myself, installed for $2200 with five year warranty - new home, so no demo.

Parents had 1200 sq ft driveway (concrete) demoed and repoured with a little extra curb work for $10,500.

Sounds ok, as long as they are hauling off the old driveway.

Better check on the 3" though, is that 3" before or after compacting? 3" will compact to 1", which is merely adequate for a light duty driveway.

How thick and what type of base can vary greatly depending on the region and soil types. Here in E. Tn. common procedure is to remove approx. 6" of clay and replace with slate rock, roll then cover with a thin layer of crusher run [gravel] to level before laying the asphalt.
