Exclamation window install in concrete block house

Looking at purchasing a concrete block house that needs all new windows. Current windows are old aluminum single pane. How do we do this? Are there any good websites about concrete block homes?

A lot depends on how your current windows are installed. On the exterior, does the cement come right up to the window, or is there a small amount of exterior trim around each window?

There are 2 ways to install windows in cement openings:

1). Install a window that is slightly smaller (1/4" or so) than the masonry opening, and seal the exterior's perimeter with a good quality polyurethane sealant. The window is shimmed and secured to the rough opening on the interior of the wall.

2). The masonry opening is lined with a PT woodbuck, then a window is installed that has a nailing flange. The nail flange is then covered with exterior trim of some type.

To a certain extent, your type of install may depend on whether your windows need to be mounted on the face of the masonry opening, or whether they will be recessed into the wall several inches. Also it may depend on whether you want to avoid doing drywall patching around the windows, or purchasing all new trim.

iv'e done a lot if its block only its usually fairly easy a couple of screws and some caulking is all thats holding them in

if the house has been stuccoed then it can be a real PITA as the stucco is applied after the windows and has to be chipped out first to get the window out
and will have to be reapplied to make it look decent

like you I couldn't really find any info on installing on this type of construction .

Block Structure Windows

Some older block structures in our area were built using blocks with a groove in the end of the blocks. The window was installed as the blocks were laid, setting the window frame in the groove. Then the extra space in the groove was filled with mortar.

If this is your situation, remove the glass and use a sawzall and a pry bar. Good luck.
