Not enough info. How far does the mantle extend beyond the brick face. What is the height of the space in the brick face. Ne construction or old. Etc. Photos and/or diagrams would make it simple.

The Mantel Extends 3 1/2 Inches With 3 1/2 Inches Resting On The Existing Brick. There was Some Motar Behind The Old One And Has Been Removed. The old mantel was resting on two supports made out of brick that extend out on each end so there was 6 inches of mantel resting on them.I Think 3/4 Inches Thick of mortar was what I am looking for.So If I Put A 3/4 Inch Layer Of Mortar,1/4 Of An Inch Will Be Displaced?am I Correct In Saying That?thanks.

Correct, it will compress and some will squeeze out. Depending on how wet your mortar is its a guideline. If it goes down to much, reset it with more mortar, too high reset it with less mortar
