How to fasten backerboards to concrete counter

Ok guys and gals....need some advice here please. I'm building a countertop for a BBQ grill. I want to stack two backerboards together supported by rebar wire or some other metal framing underneath every 16 inches or so and then tile the top. The countertop will cantilever 12 inches on one side. The main issue I'm having here is how to attach the backerboards to the counter on all sides. Can I just use mortar mix on the counter's top edges and then just place the backerboards on the concrete, or is there a better way to do this ? Thank you very much.

I would screw the first sheet down, then screw the second sheet to the first, and place decorative knee supports under the overhang every 2 foot or so. Backer is great in compression, but crap in flex and shear.
