footings

I am planning to build a small wall along my sidewalk -- no more than 3 rows of broken-up concrete high. I have no idea how THICK my footing should be. Help, please.
Email at jimndebs@sbcglobal.net would be great.
Many thanks.

How high are 3 rows?

Why bother with a footing with "broken up concrete" (whatever that is). Are you going to tie anything together or just slope it back?

No need for a footing if you are just going to pile up the stuff.

The sidewalk slopes downhill a bit and I want the wall to be level; so I want to start with a footing that is level. I plan to not 'just pile them up' but use mortar between my chunks of broken up concrete to make a nice, finished look. The question I have is -- how thick should my footing be? The wall itself will probably be no higher than 3 rows of concrete chunks -- maybe 1 1/2 feet tall at the most.
