by-hand compaction of paver base

concrete paver project 50 sq ft, would like to use a hand powered tamper to compact the paver base prior to screeding the sand and setting the pavers. Will this result in settling, shifting or an otherwise substandard job, or must I use powered vibratory compactor to comact the paver base?

My motivation is to save the time and trouble of bringing in the plate compactor twice (at base compaction and after bricks are set) on such a small job.

So long as it is foot traffic, no problems at all. Without vibratory compaction, you will be at about 50% of design specifications which is fine for light duty patios and walkways.

thanks!

just foot traffic on this one. I'll wail away with my 10 lb hand tamper on the base saving money on both power compactor rental and gym membership.

thanks for the response - I'll let you all know how it turns out
