Cleaning interior stone

Hi:
We have an interior wall of sandstone. This was once an exterior wall, and it is blackened by soot and weather. How can I clean this? I contacted a local company that sandblasts, and they won't do an interior job. I've read that some acids are not suitable for interior. I've used other cleaners, and nothing has worked.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Could one sand sandstone? It is a soft stone. It is also porous and absorbent, thus stains from weather, etc. likely lurk beneath the surface.

The good news is that you don't need an acidic cleaner. The bad news is that you need a detergent cleaner, so you will need lots and lots of water.

Can you elaborate on "detergent cleaner"? Brand? Solution mix?

Thanks.
