Question Limestone stains.

I help out with projects around our church, and have been noticing that stains, WHAT I CALL ACID RAIN STAINS are showing up on some of the limestone caps and corner pieces. I wonder if POWER WASHING with soap will remove same, and would a sealer be of help containing such in the future

Thank You,

Dale, limestone effervesces with water and breaks down. I doubt the "acid rain" allegation is the culprit. More than likely the rain is fine, but the minerals in the limestone are surfacing and creating the stains as the limestone dissolves with the rainwater. A good solution would be to replace the limestone with a durable stone like granite. A sealer may help to prevent further stains as long as it lasts, but will not be the best solution.

Thank You for your information. We will do some testing as there is just to much limestone to consider replacing.

Thanks again,

What color is the discoloration, and what type of limestone is on the building?
