Cement Table

I've got an 8' x 3/16" round metal table in my patio. As you can imagine it is flimsy. I was planning on welding 1 1/2" strapping around the circumference, screwing down 1/2" plywood then screwing down 1/4" backer board on top of the plywood. My wife was wanting a stained cement finish on top of the backer board (no tile). My question to the forum would be will this cement on top of the backer board crack?

Cement Table

Center support or suppport around the outside?

A temporary material like wood under concrete never is a good idea, especially outside.

A 4' catilever will probably cracks, especially since it will not be bonded to the steel.
