Landscape Options for Trees on a Driveway

Advice, Opinions are welcome:

I just purchased a home that has a gravel driveway. In the middle of this driveway are 2 rather mature trees (both ~40ft high, each ~ 1ft diameter, I believe it is an oak species).

I would like to pave this driveway with asphalt, and keep the 2 trees.

My thought is to build a retaining wall around the trees using large landscaping blocks - I personally think this would give much asthetic appeal to a blacktop driveway. However, it is hard to find any information on how to properly build such a retaining wall without damaging the trees, or creating any water retention issues that would cause damage the driveway.

Any advice?...

You will probably kill the trees. Do not raise the surface around them out to the drip line, or pave the same area.
