what is the name for this type of masonry/brick work?
column light, pillar, etc..?

i just call it a pillar with a brick cap. Why?

life begins when the kids leave home and the dog dies.

The photo is not large enough to clearly see the bond. Looks like a stretcher bond where the overlap between bricks is less than 1/2 and appearing to be about 1/3 or 1/4 of a brick. The standard running bond contains stretchers with joints centered to bricks below. If joints are indeed centered, you have standard running bond pattern. Running and stretcher bond patterns are very common.

The photo you present is that of what is commonly called a brick lamp post. The lamp is mounted atop a brick cap on the post. Lamp appears to be of a traditional style.

We're planning on rejuvenating our entire landscape, so I wanted to know what the name was...
