Smile skim coating old patio cement

I have an old patio made of older type cement. it is a yellower rough surface. There are a couple of minor cracks caused by tree roots. The tree was removed last year so further destruction is unlikely. Can I skim coat the existing cement? If so, where can I get instructions on how to do this?

With just a thin skim coat, you can expect the cracks to "mirror through" and show in the coating. This is also a common problem with tile on cracked or jointed concrete also even for interior locations.

If you are concerned about the cracks, you might want to consider a new patio. There could be cracks in the concrete that have not shown yet, but could show with increased weathering and temperature changes.

Others specializing in coating wil offer suggestions on selection and application if you chose to go the coating route.
