Smile fill in stone pathway

I am going remove and fill in a stone pathway that I put in years ago...reason is...getting tired of spraying for weeds.....what I need help in is....how do I figure out how much dirt to get....area is 12ft wide X 40ft long...as for depth..I am going to seed grass...so 2" to 4" (inches) I guess...I hope that this would be the same if I were to be doing cement....an answers will help...

Hi Bristo,

If I'm reading this right, you are going to remove the stone and fill the area with topsoil. Then you will seed. You should know the depth once you remove the stone. You will then be able to see the top of the soil line. Don't forget you will need to tamp down the soil before you seed. Here's a compost calculator that you can use once you start digging and know the depth.

If it requires a 4" fill, it would be about 6 cu yds of soil.

12 x 40=480 sq ft (or cu ft if it was 1ft deep)

divide by 3 (3 x 4"= 1ft) = 160 cu ft

divide by 27 (27 cu ft in 1 cu yd) = 5.92 cu yds
