Rock Wall

Hello there,

My has a large backyard area with two patios and a pool, and a door which leads to a lower level area with gardens and such. We have had a wood fence around this large, split-level, area and a fence of the same height (with that door) divides the two levels) About 8 years ago my step-mother (who used to live here) extended the fences to make it more private...however these fences aren't very sturdy and look like, well, crap. They are held up at some parts my plywood nailed into surrounding trees. Its pretty awful. If left alone, there is no doubt that the fence would come to a demise of its own accord. However, i'm tired of looking at it and would like to start planning a new way of creating a private backyard area.

I considered using iron fencing and letting vines grow up it but that would only provide privacy in the warmer months. A more attractive option (though more expensive for sure) is to just go all out and do rock. As my entire home is made of rock, all over, this seems to be a good choice aesthetically as well as structurally. I would like it to remain tall...about 8 feet, because with neighbors who have two story homes that can overlook the pool...well, it'd be nice to worry about who's peeping...8 ft pretty much cuts out all the neighbors visible windows from any point in the said area.

I know the quarry where my mother went in the 70s to pick out every rock on my house herself...so i will return there to get the rocks for this project, in hopes that it will match the effect on the exterior of my house. I'll probably replace all the wood doors that were in the fence with ones of iron.

I'm just looking for advice. Pros, cons, suggestions, comments, anything really. Is there anything i really need to look out for? take into consideration? This project is a while off, so i just want to make sure my plans are perfect and exactly what i'm going for before making a commitment.

Thanks for taking the time to read this : )

I feel this is not a DIY project. Check codes for 8 ' privacy wall. Code usually doesn't allow this. I'm a G.C. and Manson first trade. Stone work done right is an art. How good are you at trimming stone? You seem to go on about this and that and vines, Stone laid unprofessionally usually looks just that. Not nice to look at.

Whats the footer size for this wall and how deep for freeze..

The skill level needs to be thought of here.
