name of beam thingy

Does anyone know the name for a concrete beam that gets poured under a slab to prevent it from cracking if the earth beneath settles? From what I understand, it's just a deeper band of concrete that runs the length of the pad from wall to wall.

I have a foundation with six foot walls and I need to call the engineer to see what type of fill to use. The excavator also wanted me to ask if the cement guys should install these beams when they do the pad but I can't remember what they called them.

Thanks for the help.

It's probably called a "footing".

Maybe called a grade beam, or just thickened slab.
