I have an interior brick fireplace which was built in 1948. The bricks have been sealed and have a shiney sheen to them. I want to remove this shiney look and apply morter/paint to give it a used brick appearance. Has anyone tried removing a sealer from brick?? and how is the best way to give the brick that "used brick" look??

Penetrating sealers are difficult to impossbile to remove. Surfaces sealer can be tough also. Try Acetone on a rag.

If the sealer won't come off, or you want to skip the removal step apply a fast drying Oil Based Primer Sealer, then paint.
