Above the brick work is a fire place lintel made of two large slabbs of Linolnshire blue slate. I have stripped these back. including the polish, by a commbination of paint stripper hard work and a wire brush.

I am now back to the original stone which has needs the resdue of polish and paint removed and to be polished. I was going to try an electric sander and some special sand papper suitable for use on stone. any other idea before I commit to several dusty hours of work.... also any ideas on polishing or sealiny the blue slate afterwards ??

Before becoming too involved, go to a marble or stone supply, flooring shop, or a large home center where they carry stone tiles. The products to remove the residue, to polish the stone, and to seal the stone exist. Starting a resurfacing operation when it's not needed is the hard way.
