Question

We have a problem. The previous owner of our home laid down indoor/outdoor carpeting on the front porch. Have tried to scrape it off to no avail. The carpet came up but left rubber backing and glue. Is there anything I can use to take it up so I can lay ceramic tile down?

There are a number of ways:
1. 6" razor floor scraper. (A rental for a single use).
2. Adhesive or Semi Paste paint remover. (Both are nearly the same). The surface must be washed with TSP afterward, to clean up after the remover.
3. Toluene, a very nasty, toxic, flamable solvent.
4. A common Lye solution. To 3 quarts COLD water (mixed in a STAINLESS STEEL or CROCKERY POT only) slowly add 1 can common Lye while stirring. This is a CAUSITC solution and must be handled with care. The surface must be rinsed by "flooding" with water afterward, and neturalized with vinegar. The single advantage is cost.
