How does brick compare to the cost of Stone in Exterior wall applications. Obviously the cost of materials will vary according to exact choice, but what are the standard costs of materials and labor. Also how do the different materials compare as far as resale, durability and insulating values? Thanks for any information.

Refine your choices down to managable proportions. Choose among thousands of brick, (there might be 40 or more kinds at one of the larger yards, spanning a range of a few hundred dollars per thousand) a hundred or so kinds of stone, (again, multiple choice), and then compare similar structures with similar details.

Generally, stone veneer will be at least twice as much as brick veneer. Simple details like changing the bond patten of brick work or choosing cut coursed stone over stone rubble can obsure anything that could be considered a "standard material cost". A local masonry supply can provide a better general cost comparision for the area where you intend to build. For both materials and labor.

Brick homes tend to apperciate at about 6% over those with other cladding (according to one index consulted). The slightly higher initial cost is offest by lower maintenance (if unpainted), and a general higher resale value. The R value of brick ranges from .05 to .11 per inch.

Other than "ho-hum" rubble, stone increases in value if it's done tastefully. Buyers tend to be more affluent than most people.
An average R value for stone is around .08 per inch.
