How important is it to compact in layers?

Hey folks,

I'm putting pavers down for a patio near my pool. I'm putting 6" of 3/4" crusher. It's a total of 600 sq feet.

I have two choices:

Have BobCat spread 3" of base over the full area, and then make piles close by of the rest the material. Then I'd rent a compactor. Compact the first 3", manually shovel over the next 3" and compact that layer. Might have to rent the compactor twice in this scenario.

Or

Have BobCat spread all 6" of base. I rent a compactor and compact it.

Obviously the second option is highly preferred. But am I shooting myself in the foot? Is it really important to compact it 3" at a time?

Thanks!

Compaction

Stone compacts much less than soil. One compaction should be fine.
