Flaking interior brick wall
Hi,
The wall is 10 feet across and 14 feet high. A few of the very bottom bricks about 5 are flaking, 99% of the brick wall is fine. Its an interior wall (the bricks have been there about 200 years). Its in New Orleans. What can I do to stop this? The apartment above (which has the roof above it) had a leak.
Thank you

The apartment above is on the top floor which has a few leaks in the roof. There are 3 floors and my place is on the second floor. The brick wall is not painted and it does need to have a coating (I forget the correct word) put on it.
Thanks so much for the reply.

Hi,
Thought the roof was fixed but there was a hard rain and the persons who apartment is above mine saw 4 leaks. The person who fixed the roof has to go back and see where the leaks are and repair. It rained hard today so I will talk to the building manager to find out what happened.
I forget the word that what needs to be done but part of the wall's coating wore off. Wish I could send a photo of it but have no idea how.

you can't do anything - the wtr must be stopped from the outside/upstairs,,, even if you could stop it on the surface of the brick, it would still be there - you just wouldn't see it & the damage its causing til it pops out some place else - trust me, it will !
1st it wasn't coated now it is ? ? ?

It sounds like you are in a building with a flat roof. The roof drains could be clogged plus the tar needs to be patched. It hard to find those leaks.

Hi,
Yes its a flat roof.
Thanks for the information on Photo Bucket.
Here is the links. I think only 1 brick is flaking badly. But you see the top of the wall is still coated.

From what I am reading I think I have to wait for the roof leaks to be repaired.
Thank you and everyone for their assistance. I know nothing about stuff like this and am not that good with the internet so I was not able to find an answer for an interior brick problem.

Once the leaks are repaired. Will the brick continue to flake even though there is no leak? What should I do to repair the brick that is badly flaked, once the flaking has stopped. The top of the brick has something on it the lower on the wall it is just plain brick. What should I do for the entire wall?
Thanks
Thanks

I asked you what's behind the brick wall but you didn't say. Were the bricks installed against a plaster or poured concrete wall? Is there another room on the other side or is it an outside wall?

I don't know whats behind the wall but the building is over 200 years old. But the wall on the other side is the exterior of the building and a staircase going to the third floor.

As stadry1 was saying in his post, if water is trapped behind the brick, future damage will occur. Wait a few weeks after the roof has been repaired to see what happens. Maybe you can remove & replace the damaged bricks. I would not seal the wall, under any circumstances.
